Euro 2008 - Picks

Date Time Team Score Team
7 June 2008 18:00 Switzerland 0 - 1 Czech Republic
Pick: 2Show Match Description Odd: 2.86: Betfair
The favourites of this clash seem to be the Czech team. This indicates both the recent form shown by this team and the place in Fifa ranking. Czechs have gone to EURO without Nedved and it could seem the morale of the team will lower. However it hasn’t as the team manages very well even without him. They won qualification without problem. Additionally, the national team of Switzerland does not seem good and it will be hard for them to qualify from the group. You can’t distinguish anyone in this team except for Senderos and Frei. But these two players can’t stand up for good-playing Czech national team.
7 June 2008 20:45 Portugal 2 - 0 Turkey
Pick: 1XShow Match Description Odd: 1.16: Centrebet
Under/Over: Under Odd: 1.71: Pinnacle Sports
Doubtless in the group A, Portugal and Czech Republic have the largest chances for qualification, but you can not scorn the teams of Turkey and Switzerland here. Portugal despite many stars in the team such as: Ronaldo, Carvalho, Deco, Nani and many others who play well in clubs but can’t find form in national team. Overall, they have been playing poor recently. During the last two friendly matches they encountered losses with Italy and Greece. They also didn’t play well in the second part of Euro 2008 qualifications. They drew with Poland at home, Serbia and Armenia. Modest victories came with weak European teams such as: Azerbejdzan or Kazakhstan. The team of Turkey also doesn’t lack stars but smaller format. The majority of Turkish players play in Turkish clubs. We all know Nihat perfectly, playing for Villareal. He is in excellent form recently. This is his great contribution to the team that led Villareal to qualifying for Champions League. On EURO, responsibility for play will be laid upon his shoulders and I reckon he will fulfil all his duties during matches. I think that although the Turks are on a little lower level than the Portuguese, they are capable of a little surprise. I however will bet in this game on under 2.5 goal because many matches of these teams ended with such a result. Both teams will not want to put everything at stake already in the first game in the group.
8 June 2008 18:00 Austria 0 - 1 Croatia
Pick: 2Show Match Description Odd: 1.95: Bet1128
Austria in spite it is the organizer of European Football Championship has small chances for qualifying from the group and even for a victory in one of three matches. They seek their chances in the match against Poland, but it is overestimation, because the team of Leo Beenhaaker plays recently very well and Austria just the opposite. First Austrians rival is the team of Croatia which played exceptionally well in qualifications. They even managed to win the game for nothing with England, when they deprived them of their participation in this event. I believe the favourite of this clash is Croatian team and that’s why I bet on them.
8 June 2008 20:45 Germany 2 - 0 Poland
Pick: 1Show Match Description Odd: 1.57: Ladbrokes
The German team not only is the main favourite but is said to have good chances for a final win in Euro 2008 as well. So “Polish” group will not be such easy as it seemed. Germany will certainly want to take revenge for the failure on World Cup which they organized. In this game Poland should not seek chances for earning points but from two next team games. I reckon German national team is too good for White and Red. All is however possible as Poland has already dealt with the Czechs and did not lose in qualifications any game with strong Portugal. We will see how it is going to be on EURO but I bet on Germans in this game.
9 June 2008 18:00 Romania 0 - 0 France
Pick: 2Show Match Description Odd: 1.86: Betfair
Under/Over: Over Odd: 2.5: Betfair
This is undoubtedly a death group. Because team such as: France, Holland or Italy are one of the strongest in Europe. Romania has very faint chances for qualification to quarter-final and their morale are surely not high. Adrian Mutu himself will not lead his team to even a single victory. France however is a very strong team with talented and experienced players who have already played, among others on WC in Germany. If France wants to go out of the group, then it should surely defeat the team of Romania, and if this possible with the biggest difference in goals, because it might decide whether or not they qualify.
9 June 2008 20:45 Netherlands 3 - 0 Italy
Pick: X2Show Match Description Odd: 1.36: Centrebet
Bookmakers favour Italians in this game and I also think they should deal with Dutchmen, but nobody will give away a victory on this tournament for free, that is why they will have to strongly exert first to win any points in the group. The match will surely be even because two very good teams play. The players of Holland have made really good appearances in their clubs recently and they are praised. Italians, strengthened by the last victory on World Cup, surely aim at the next success. In my betting I will support Italians as everything is possible in this game, but the Italians shouldn’t loose this game.
10 June 2008 18:00 Spain 4 - 1 Russian Federation
Pick: 1Show Match Description Odd: 1.75: Interwetten
The group D is also very strong and you can expect everything from it. Probably the biggest chances has Spanish national team. The excellent forwards such as Torres and Villa. These are remarkable strikers, for which the biggest European clubs fight. Russia, also an excellent team, which owes one's participation in this tournament to Croatia. But I think that they should be here anyways, because this is a very solid team and really can fight with the best in this tournament. Although it seems that the game will be one-sided, I however believe that Russia will not surrender easily but will not win this game either.
10 June 2008 20:45 Greece 0 - 2 Sweden
Pick: XShow Match Description Odd: 3.17: Pinnacle Sports
Under/Over: Under Odd: 1.55: Gamebookers
In the first round also this duo is very strong. In this match I would favour the team of Sweden which seems to be stronger. The forward formation with Zlatan, is a truly remarkable thing. This striker is really unpredictable and his physical attributes give him advantage over defenders. So nothing strange it will be if the majority of balls is played to him. There are also good footballers in Greek team. Therefore qualification from the group of any team will not be such easy and the last game may be decisive. The most probable result here seems to be a draw and I bet so. Greeks probably will perform their play, that is to defend, ‘under’ probable
11 June 2008 18:00 Czech Republic 1 - 3 Portugal
Pick: XShow Match Description Odd: 3.25: Blue Square
This no doubt will be the most interesting game in the group A. Two teams which are expected to easily qualify from the group play in this match. The team from Iberian Peninsula is favoured by bookmakers but Czech team is better organized as I see it. And they should reach farther in this Championship according to me, but it all depends on who they play with. The man who will be running the game is surely Christiano Ronaldo on whom many hopes lay in Portugal. Despite having excellent players it’s hard for them to create a good team. Czechs on the contrary - they are settled and behave on the field better and that surely gives them advantage but their brain – Rosicky – unfortunately will not play. I count on the draw in this game.
11 June 2008 20:45 Switzerland 1 - 2 Turkey
Pick: 1Show Match Description Odd: 2.3: Interwetten
This is little attractive game in the group A, but very important for both these teams. None of them will want to be last because this does not bring fame and glory. The Swiss look better for me. They show better playing style than the Turks. These second don’t have much better footballers than the Swisss. Except for Nihat, whose duty will be scoring goals, none of the players can be depend on. However Villareal’s striker by himself will not do much and you can hardly count on help from the colleagues from the team. The Switzerland despite the fact that they also don’t have anything particular to be proud of, they are however the hosts of the tournament and I believe they should deal with Turkish national team.
12 June 2008 18:00 Croatia 2 - 1 Germany
Pick: 1XShow Match Description Odd: 1.77: Bwin
This for sure is the most interesting game in the group B where Poland plays as well. If this was the last round of group phase, then we could have said that this really would be a game for nothing, however these teams will meet in second match what gives the various possibilities standing in the table after this fixture. Germany, which is said to be in the group of favourites for winning this tournament, seems to be favourites of this clash. Every formation of this team is really gifted. The same can be said about Croatian national team, which created a big consternation in Europe lately. However the Croats morale can be strongly damaged with the lack of Eduardo who is recovering from injury. Nevertheless there are also great players similar to Eduardo, such as Modric or Krancjar, who with the rest of players can cause real trouble for the Germans, that is why I bet on Croats with support.
12 June 2008 20:45 Austria 1 - 1 Poland
Pick: 2Show Match Description Odd: 2.38: Ladbrokes
This is the match which I believe Poland has chances for getting 3 points. Poland has small chances for any points in the first game with Germany but a chance is already big in this. Austria is still so weak team, that if it was not for her organizing Championship, Polish team would have a different rival for sure. That is why we can’t lose nor draw this game. Goals in this game will also be very important, like in the game against Germany, because the last match with Croatia may decide who will qualify from the group. Form of our team has been high and stable for a long time whereas the Austrians lose game after game. In their last friendly they fought with Holland bravely but they lost at last 4 : 3. I reckon Poland should make use of an easy chance for getting 3 points.
13 June 2008 18:00 Italy 1 - 1 Romania
Pick: 1Show Match Description Odd: 1.8: Sportingbet
If Italians won in the first round with Holland they could theoretically assure their place in quarter-final of EURO 2008 after this game already. Romania had overall very bad drawing and in this group it shouldn’t cause any trouble for ot0her teams. Romania, despite that it should be reconciled with the fact that they will not qualify from the group, won’t come on the tournament to be beaten in a terrible way but they will want to fight and appear on the international arena. I bet on Italy in this match, which is also a favourite of bookmakers.
13 June 2008 20:45 Netherlands 4 - 1 France
Pick: 1XShow Match Description Odd: 1.5: Bwin
Holland in the first two rounds in team phase has two very tough matches and these will mainly decide about their further presence in the tournament. It will be surely an even match, played on very high level. Both teams will not want to lose any game, even if they had small chances for advancing to quarter-final. Frenchmen play may be different without Zidane but with or without him they are still superb team with strong position on international arena. Holland’s team has taken off with form recently and is on the winning strike. Robben, Sneijder and Nistelrooy had a very good end of the season in Real, not mentioning the rest, that is why in this game I am going to bet on Dutchmen ‘with support’.
14 June 2008 18:00 Sweden 1 - 2 Spain
Pick: 2Show Match Description Odd: 1.95: Betsson
This may be a key match for both teams. It will remain mystery to the end who will qualify and who will already end his participation in phase group. Bookmakers’ favourite is Spain and it has the biggest chances for a victory in the group. Fight about the second place will be hard-fought for sure but in both cases teams has chances. In this game real battle may be fought among excellent strikers of both teams who score goals on demand. Torres settled in Premiership fantastically and if he keeps playing like in Liverpool not only Swedish defenders will have trouble with him but also other teams. In this game I firmly bet on Spaniards.
14 June 2008 20:45 Greece 0 - 1 Russian Federation
Pick: 1Show Match Description Odd: 2.6: Bwin
Very important game for both teams. Both Russia and Greece regardless of results in the first round will have theoretical chances for qualification from the group. Obviously neither of them will be counting on errors of opposition but they will want to win qualification by themselves. A really difficult match to place a bet yet I would be more for Greece. They show quite nice football and skills. Generally their playing style is not necessarily appealing but they are extremely effective. Russia won the promotion a bit accidentally, they lack experience on this type of tournament. I believe that Greeks and will turn out to be the winners and I bet on them.
15 June 2008 20:45 Switzerland 2 - 0 Portugal
Pick: X2Show Match Description Odd: 1.36: 888sport
Portugal as the first team has secured their qualification to quarter finals of Euro 2008. They confidently beat Czech team 3 : 1 in their last match. Switzerland is the only team in the group that hasn’t captured even a point, though they had big chances for a draw in last match with Turkey. They lost their hopes after an injury time goal for Turkey. If that match had been drawn all teams would have had chances of qualifying. But now none of these teams have anything to fight for, although the hosts will want to salvage their honor and shouldn’t end group phase with no points. Zero-points state can be a huge surprise because Swiss played very well both with Czechs and with Turks in extremely difficult conditions. What’s more, they lost their best player in the team – Frei - who had to leave the pitch in the opening match with Czechs. And he was leaving the field with tears in his eyes because he knew that it was the end of his play in this tournament. I believe Swiss are capable of salvaging a point playing against fighting-for-nothing Portugal.
15 June 2008 20:45 Turkey 3 - 2 Czech Republic
Pick: 2Show Match Description Odd: 2.4: Interwetten
Under/Over: Under Odd: 1.6: Mybet
A very important game for both teams. It is worth mentioning that both teams have the same balance of goals 2 : 3, so draw in this game will not bring anything to the table. That’s why these teams have to try to play for full points. Turkey got 3 points in the game against Switzerland by a miracle scoring a goal in injury time, but the conditions for playing were not normal and none of teams could really present theirs skills as puddles and heavy rain made it impossible. They lost earlier in their first game with Portugal 2 : 0. Czechs do not impress with their play in this tournament. If it was not for Cech they could have been packing and going home after this match. They’ve got however 3 points on their account achieved in the match against Switzerland. They were playing very poorly and nobody really deserved 3 points. It is opposite and they still have chances to qualify from the group. The condition is a win over Turkey in the last game. This game will be crucial for the final standing as Portugal secured their qualification earlier while Swiss didn’t gain a point. Czechs, despite a 3 : 1 result, showed a little better football. I reckon that national team of Czech will rise to the challenge under pressure and beat Turkey. You can see lack of some players in their team. No Rosicky, Poborsky and other significant players is visible. Baros and Koller haven’t contributed well and yet they are rather a burden for the national team. Despite all this, I think the Czech team will be able to grab a win in this game.
16 June 2008 20:45 Austria 0 - 1 Germany
Pick: 2Show Match Description Odd: 1.45: Interwetten
The hosts of the tournament after a draw with Poland retained their chances of qualifying form the group but, don’t fool yourself, everybody knows that Austrians have no chances of winning with Germans and draw does not give them anything. The situation would have been completely different if Germany hadn’t lost with Croatian national team which won 2 : 1. Germany was completely broken down in this game but after a lost goal they managed to put Croatians under pressure and scored an honourable goal by Podolski. Now Podolski is a joint top scorer with Villa. I think that Germany will not let be pushed to defence by Austria, which in this game will have to take huge risks as only win gives them anything. Situation should rather be opposite and Germany should more often attack a goal defended by Macho, whose play improves with every game but yet is far from world-class goalkeeping. Germany will probably want to score a quick goal which will allow them to secure a win. So now only a victory against Germans in this game saves Austria and it will be very tough. Germany is a strong favourite and even playing at home won’t help Austrian team.
16 June 2008 20:45 Poland 0 - 1 Croatia
Pick: 1XShow Match Description Odd: 1.39: Bwin
So long have Croatia been regarded as a dark horse of the tournament and it is so. They grabbed a win 2 : 1 against Germany in their latest match. You can see that even without Eduardo, who was supposed to lead this team, they are doing great. On the other hand, Poland lost chances of qualification ‘thanks to the judge’. After a loss of a goal from penalty in 93rd minute of the game the dream about quarter-final faded away. For that kind of jostling in penalty area you just can’t give penalty. What’s more, Webb referees in English Premiere League where no referee would have done something like that because he would be mocked. There is no doubt that our team was playing really poorly for the first 25 minutes, nevertheless they managed to score in 29th minute which completely broke Austrians down. Even this draw was hard to keep but great parades by Boruc kept us in game. The only thing left was to save a penalty, which he didn’t, but I think he will be a great transfer target for the biggest European clubs after this game. I reckon that if we played like at the beginning of the second half we can beat Croatia which isn’t fighting for anything.
17 June 2008 20:45 France 0 - 2 Italy
Pick: 2Show Match Description Odd: 2.5: Expekt
Under/Over: Under Odd: 1.77: Betfair
Both teams don’t shine on these championships. If it was not for Italians draw with Romania they could already be leaving the tournament. However not used penalty still gives hope for advancing to quarter-final. They have already drew 1 : 1 with Romania and lost 3 : 0 with the team of Holland. Nobody here expected such play from World Champions. France, like Italians, weren’t able to beat Romanians and need to be satisfied with a draw which really complicates their situation. A draw in this match means knock-out for both teams. That is why both teams need to fight for a win which would bring them closer to quarter-final. Although both teams have the same goal balance 1 : 4, Italy seems to be a better team, what they proved in the match against Romania, which they drew very unlucky because a ref didn’t allow a rightly scored goal. In this match I bet on Italian national team because they need a win and good result form Holland to advance to the next round.
17 June 2008 20:45 Netherlands 2 - 0 Romania
Pick: X2Show Match Description Odd: 1.38: Bwin
It will be a really interesting encounter. Holland has been playing brilliantly so far and actually that’s no surprise. They have excellent squad. They have defeated World Champions 3 : 0 and France 4 : 1. This sealed their qualification to quarter-final and they emerge as a favourite of this tournament. Their opponents play very well on these championships as well and they weren’t beaten by Italy nor by Frenchmen. Both games ended as draw, what gives Romania 2nd place in the group and big chance for qualification. A lot will depend on first game that day Italy - Romania because if there is a draw then Romania is almost surely in quarter-final because I do not believe they will loose 3 goals with Dutchmen who have already secured their qualification. It’s very probable that they will assign reserve team in this match. If Adrian Mutu had scored from a penalty in 80th minute Italians would be packing home. Penalty was not scored and in the end all 3 teams has chances for quarter-final. Romania however will have to play for the maximum to qualify and show everyone that they are a team capable of qualifying from their group.
18 June 2008 20:45 Greece 1 - 2 Spain
Pick: 2Show Match Description Odd: 1.8: Bet-at-home

Greece is heading home after this match and defenders of European Champions title from 2004 still can’t believe it. They haven’t scored a single goal in the tournament so far. The group is pretty strong and that didn’t make things easier. They lost 2 : 0 with Sweden in their first game and they were playing for remaining in the tournament with Russia with which they also lost 1 : 0. An adventure with European Football Championships ends for them with this match. It’s just the opposite for Spain. They have scored 6 times on the tournament and after a previous game with Swedes they secured their qualification to quarter-final. The match was tough until Ibrahimovic left the pitch. Then Spaniards started to dominate but their attacks brought a goal just in injury time when David Villa made a clinical finish scoring his 4th goal of the tournament and emerging as a main candidate for a top-scorer of this tournament. He is probably to increase his goal account in forthcoming matches. Many believed that like in most big tournaments Spain will start well but won’t qualify from the group. It isn’t like that and Spain is playing better and better. What’s more, they have great strikers which are wanted by the biggest European clubs. Greeks played very averagely on this tournament and I think that even a team of Spain, which isn’t fighting for anything in this match, will be able to defeat them.
18 June 2008 20:45 Russian Federation 2 - 0 Sweden
Pick: 1Show Match Description Odd: 2.65: Betfair
This will be the last duel in team phase and at the same time very interesting as both teams fight for advance to quarter-final of European Football Championship. Russians started the tournament very badly with a heavy loss against Spaniards 4 : 1. They defeated Greeks 1 : 0 in their second game. In that game they showed that they really are a good team. They saved chances for the qualification thanks to this victory. But the reason is beating Swedish team which unluckily lost 2 : 1 with Spain, losing an injury time goal. What’s more, their best striker Zlatan Ibrachimovic sustained an injury yesterday but he should play with Russians. You can see that after he left the pitch Sweden played much worse and less often created goal-scoring opportunities. Zalatan is a type of player who dictates tempo and keeps possession and without him Swedes lack creativity. In this fixture both teams will give theirs maximum because the game is about great stake. Andrei Arshavin will return to Russian squad after a ban for the first two matches for a red card in a game against Andorra. I believe he is able to lead Russians to the quarter-final and I bet on Russian national team.

Both teams are revelations of this tournament, like Romanians. Croatia had been expected to qualify from the group but hardly anyone expected them to do it from the first place, beating Germany along way. What Turkey did is almost unimaginable. They fought for qualification with Czechs. After 70 minutes they were losing 2 : 0 and almost nobody counted on them. A goal in 75th minute brought hope at least for a draw. The closer to the end the more Czech team had defensive approach and Turkey still attacked. At the end of the match two minutes shocked Czechs. Two goals from Nihat eliminated Czech team from further play in the tournament. The blame is on Czech’s side that played too defensively but you have to hail Turks for their play. Croatia has recently shown that they may be a dark horse of the tournament. First they beat Germans then won with Poland playing reserves and having nothing at stake. Each and every of these boys wanted to prove his value for the team and although they played well there are small chances that they will be first team in the next match. Turkey still has its place in the tournament thanks to incredible endings of matches. They saved themselves like that twice. I believe however that a better team in this quarter-final is Bilic’s team which convinced me with their style of playing.

It will be a truly remarkable quarter-final. Both teams showed their best in group phase and deserved to qualify. I will begin with Holland. They gained their qualification already after two matches with the strongest in the group – France and Italy – and they humbled them playing in a very good style. In the last match Van Basten assigned reserves to play but they also wanted to prove their contribution to the team. Their firmly beat Romania but many players from that match won’t play again on the next matches of the tournament. The Dutch have already scored 9 goals in 3 matches and not against weak opponents. Russians are surely a huge revelation of the tournament. They are superbly prepared by Hiddink and you can see his impact on the team. After losing their first game they managed to stand up and achieve a great victory over Greeks and then in the most important match against Sweden. Hiddink knew what he was doing when he took Arshavin for Championships although he couldn’t play in the first two matches. It was him and Siemak who were key figures in their last match. If it hadn’t been for poor finishing from Pavluchenko the score line against Swedes would have been much better. Both teams are excellently prepared and we will surely watch a great show where the winner can be anybody, with little more chances for Holland. They are the main favourites for a final win but it’s a long way ahead of them yet. It won’t be as easy for Holland to score plenty of goals as in previous matches but I think they will win this encounter. It is undoubtedly a shame that one of these teams will have to be knocked out from the tournament.

This match also seems to be interesting. Spain won the qualification already after two matches against Russia and Sweden. With 4 goals scored Villa has become a revelation of the tournament. Duo Torres – Villa makes really terrific forward on these Championships. In phase group they scored 8 goals conceding 3. Not many bet that they would qualify from the group. On most of the tournaments they started like in the match against Russia, with a high win, but then suddenly all was coming undone and Spaniards ended their participation. We can see a different situation here and Spain seems to be one of the favourites. Let’s take a look at Italians. Current World Cup holders don’t amaze and according to me they should end their play soon. In the match for everything they won 2 : 0 with France securing their qualification. We don’t know how things would have been if France hadn’t played 10 men and Ribery hadn’t had to leave the pitch already in 10th minute. These factors decided that Italian team gained advantage. France also had good chances to score but Buffon was always being better. I wonder if Villa and Torres will be able to beat this goalkeeper. I reckon there is big chance of that as Italian defence is not that good. Italy is a kind of tournament team which plays better with every match but in my opinion they have no chances against Spain and I bet so.
